Program Overview: Significant evidence shows the actions of the principal and other members of the school leadership team directly influence the wellbeing of the school community. Many school staff wellbeing initiatives that address high levels of work-related stress are well-intentioned but often focus only on boosting morale. While this is a useful starting point, to be effective staff wellbeing strategies need to be embedded in school culture and prioritised to ensure they are adequately funded and resourced.
Join Professor Donna Cross OAM, respected behavioural scientist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Western Australia as she presents two dynamic webinars unpacking quality national and international evidence showing the benefits and value of schools actively engaging families in the development of students’ learning and wellbeing. These benefits include students’ higher academic achievement, increased confidence and motivation, improved school attendance, enhanced wellbeing and mental health, higher likelihood of graduation, improved positive attitudes about school and improved behaviour.
The first one-hour webinar ‘Empowering school staff wellbeing: Strategies for success’ will address systematic evidence-driven strategies and considerations for improving school staff wellbeing that address organisational and interpersonal factors, not just individual coping skills. It will address the importance of:
- a holistic approach to all staff wellbeing that includes systemic change
- the role of leadership
- mental health promotion and support
- self-care and wellbeing initiatives tailored to the needs of staff.
The second webinar ‘Enhancing school staff’s positive engagement with students and families’ will provide a brief overview of evidence-based practical strategies found to improve partnerships and positive engagement with families to support students’ wellbeing, and therefore achievement. It will also briefly address actions that can be taken to support school staff when parent relationships may not be positive.
