Description:

This professional learning is an opportunity for primary and secondary Mathematics and/or Digital Technologies teachers (F – Year 10) to learn about the links in their subject to artificial intelligence (AI). This rapidly expanding, new field of knowledge is impacting every aspect of our lives, often in ways we do not see. This professional learning will help participants understand some of the almost invisible ways that AI operates in our lives, the possibilities it creates and the ethical implications that can lie behind the algorithms, to enable them to create engaging and innovative activities for students.

It will begin with an introductory webinar which will investigate the AI concepts in mathematics (data and probability) and digital technologies (data, digital systems, defining problems). The webinar will provide participants with an opportunity to extend understanding of the principles that underpin AI and explore how students can use AI in intriguing ways as part of classroom learning. Participants will then be guided through an action research model to implement a unit of work in mathematics and/or digital technologies.

As part of the action research cycle, in small groups, participants will be mentored through a series of three virtual one-hour workshops to design, implement and evaluate a unit of work that embeds AI into student learning.

You will have access to a range of professional learning resources that include:

• My Computer Brain Learning platform (interactive AI). This online platform has many interactive AI experiments, suitable for primary and secondary teachers to learn about AI and draw inspiration for classroom lessons. Selected lessons are accompanied by lesson plans, co-developed with the Digital Technologies Institute and the Digital Technologies Hub.
• Virtual AI teacher professional development access for participants for self-directed hands-on AI learning, such as: creating AI Models, AI and conventional programming, ethics, bias, inner workings of AI and AI scenarios with links to Mathematics.

This professional learning will run over two terms and will be offered virtually in Semester 1 and repeated with a new group in Semester 2. No prior knowledge of AI is expected, and it is hoped participants will come to this professional learning curious about AI and beginning to wonder about the exciting possibilities for student learning.
